Principal's Message

  • Welcome to Coyote Country and the 2016-17 school year at Buena Park High School. For those returning, welcome home, and for those new to the Coyote Family…we’re glad you’re finally here! BPHS is blessed to be a part of an outstanding community along with the students, parents and staff that continue to bring Buena Park High School to even greater heights.

Buena Park High School continues to offer a complete Honors/AP and college prep program that has a history of providing students with the necessary education to attend our nation’s finest educational institutions: Stanford, UCI, USC, UCLA, Claremont Colleges, Cal State Schools, UCSD, APU, and many more. The past year we have witnessed some incredible accomplishments from our entire Coyote Family: State ranking (7/10) and similar schools ranking (10/10) ranks, multiple CIF championships, Newsweek’s National Top 1000 High Schools and US News and World Report’s Top 1000 (#3 of the FJUHSD schools). The greatest of these has been that Buena Park High School was awarded four statewide awards: 2015 Gold Ribbon School, 2015 Exemplary ARTS School, 2015 Exemplary C.T.E. School, and 2015 Title 1 Academic Achievement School; the ONLY SCHOOL (K-12, Public or Private) to receive all four awards in the entire state of California. For information on Buena Park High School’s SARC (School Accountability Report Card) please go to our website www.buenaparkhs.org. Buena Park High School has also opened a number of specialize academic programs that make BPHS the “High School of Destination:”

EARLY COLLEGE: partnership with Cal State Fullerton, Fullerton College and Mt. San Antonio College (Mt. SAC) where students take college classes during their regular school day and earn both UC-/CSU-transferable college credit while meeting their high school graduation requirements.

CAVPA (Coyote Academy of Visual and Performing Arts): Fine Arts pathway that includes all five branches of the arts: Band & Orchestra, Vocal Music, Digital/Media Arts, Dance, Theater, and 2-D and 3D fine art.

Agricultural Sciences Academy: BPHS is home to the #1 High School Agriculture Program in the Western USA.

ASCEND Engineering & Robotics Academy: This engineering program fully implements the nationally recognized “Project Lead the Wayprogram, with a capstone course—Engineering 100 course through Cal State Fullerton.

AFJROTC and Aerospace Engineering/Ground School Flight Program: As part of the AFJROTC program students are able to earn their ground school flight certification toward their pilot’s license.

Sports Medicine: One of the few Sports Medicine programs throughout the area that allows students to take Honors Human Anatomy and actual sports medicine course preparing toward post-secondary education.

Bottom-line—your son/daughter will be a part of this incredible heritage and potential!

As a fellow parent, I would remind us all that our role as academic and homework monitor, motivator, and loving disciplinarian is crucial to our children’s success. There are a couple of things to keep in mind:

    1) There is almost always homework, 2) Check in on your student’s teachers’ webpages and/or ABI accounts for class information, 3) All absences affect class grades and must be cleared via note or phone call, 4) Touch base with your student’s counselor at least once a year, 5) Know where/when/what/how/with whom our children are “doing their thing,” and 7) You and I own our child’s/student’s academic progress by staying in touch with all aspects. I realize that at this age many would prefer that we start to take a back-seat to what is happening, but I also know they truly need our involvement and guidance more than ever. We at BPHS are pleased to be able to do whatever we can to assist you in the privilege/challenge before us all.

We also offer a wide variety of extra and co-curricular programs. We truly believe it is crucial that all students become involved in some type of school activity/team. It provides students with the necessary feeling of belonging and helps to develop their self-confidence and life skills. As partners in the educational process, parents and guardians provide the crucial encouragement, monitoring, and support to our children that are vital to their success. Every BPHS student is enrolled to not only gain his or her four-year diploma, but to proceed on to a 2- to 4-year post high school education (8 Year Educational/Career Plan). We appreciate you and your support, as your role cannot be underestimated nor duplicated by any institution. I look forward to seeing you this school year, and throughout the AWESOME year ahead. Thank you for enrolling at BPHS, Home of Scholars and Champions.
