Interim Principal's Message

Dear Sonora Students, Staff and Parents,

It is with great pleasure and humility to begin to serve the Sonora community as Interim Principal.  Dr. Bailey, who has served as more than a principal over the last eight years, has accepted a position as Director of Personnel for the Riverside Department of Education.  Dr. Bailey did an amazing job of laying the foundations of academic rigor while building strong relationships with students, parents, and community partners.  My goal is to continue this legacy and ensure that every student has equal opportunities and access to experiential learning opportunities, strives for academic excellence, and is college and career ready upon graduation.

I bring to this position over 20 years of experience serving in education as a classroom teacher and administrator. Over the last two years as Assistant Principal of Instruction and Operations at Sonora, we have seen growth in a variety of our programs. For example, in our Career Technical Education classes, we are proud to have 154 students in grades 10-12, that when they graduate from Sonora, will have acquired specialized skills in a specific field as well as college credits earned concurrently.  Our International Baccalaureate (IB) Program has grown exponentially growing from less than four full IB Candidates to 33 last year, and I will continue our work with our IB Coordinator and students to see the continued growth trajectory of the program.  Perhaps one of the best things that we do at Sonora is in the work in servicing of our at-risk students.  We have worked well with our feeder schools to identify students who need additional support and as a Districtwide Professional Learning Community to bring our at-risk students to a level that makes them academically competitive with their counterparts.  I look to continue to support these programs and expand these opportunities for all students.

While we are navigating through unprecedented times, I ensure that we will continue to work with our district in creating the safest environment for our students' return. I am confident that working together as a team, students, parents, teachers, staff, and administrators will continue to build on the Sonora foundation that is rich in tradition, vision, and excellence.

I look forward to working with you. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me at matkins@fjuhsd.org

Sincerely,

Mr. Marvin Atkins
