Graduation 2020 Announcement

Hello Class of 2020 Seniors and Senior Parents,

I hope this email finds you and your family safe, healthy, and enjoying your summer. I want to start by saying I am once again so sorry for all that was lost at the end of the 2020 School Year as our Sonora Community addressed the many aspects of the COVID-19 Pandemic. So many events that make up the most celebratory part of your Senior year had to be canceled in the name of safety. Through it all, you, your parents, and our staff displayed empathy, patience, and grace as we supported each other through this unprecedented time. One of the events that was postponed was our Graduation Ceremony, and we looked toward an August 6th date to reschedule this event.

During the early part of the summer, we were on the way to a partial re-opening of athletics and an increasing decline in the number of COVID-19 cases in our State and County until that all changed. With a recent increase in COVID-19 cases in California and in Orange County, and in response to the new requirements set forth by our Governor on 7/17/2020, we needed to stop the re-opening of athletics and are now looking at a possible Distance Learning option to begin the 2020/2021 School Year. With this new, and unfortunately, an all too familiar return to a partial shutdown of our school and community, we simply can not host the graduation previously scheduled for August 6th, 2020 that would honor and celebrate you and your parents and maintain a safe environment for our students, parents, and staff in the process.

The only thing that brings me and our staff any comfort is knowing that despite all that was lost at the end of the 2020 School Year we have heard of so many stories of success and achievement from all of you during this summer. No matter how much the uncontrollable circumstances of the world have taken from us, our Seniors have continued to persevere and plan for the future. I am truly sorry to bring you this unfortunate news and we wish you all the best in everything you will do in the future.

Gratefully,

Dr. Bailey
